It was - I think - Dr Young who explained to me on another list that if the establishment was to recognise the problem it would be obliged to find the money to deal with it - so the establishment finds it convenient not to look.
So the first step would seem to be to establish the prevalence - to that end could I ask that everyone affected use the Yellow card scheme to report their addiction to codeine.

Yellow card reporting is not used enough to get a real idea about the effects that people have
It must be remembered that some effects only occur in a very tiny minority of people.. or the sympton/event may not even be due to the medication that is being taken
Therefore, it is important to get as many reports as possible, so that the this can be assessed
I am confident that the yellow cards are looked at by the MHRA, as I do read reports where they include reference to them, and extra info on medication has had to be included in patient information leaflet, and prescribing advice given to GPs
There is a real drive by the MHRA to get people to complete the yellow card.. you can get one(hopefully) from your local pharmacy
Drugs are researched, however, patient use in the 'real world' can not be replicated, so please do fill them in, send them off, and be confident that they are read and used!
ps I do NOT work for the MHRA! |
